Bataan is a mountainous province along the western coast of Luzon island. It occupies the entire Bataan Peninsula in the Central Luzon region. It is bounded by Manila Bay and the South China Sea with Zambales and Pampanga provinces adjoining it in its northern borders.
Bataan is famous in history as the place where one of the last stands of American and Filipino soldiers were made before they were overwhelmed by the invading Japanese forces in World War II. The Bataan Death March was named for this province, where the infamous march started. The tall monument called Dambana ng Kagitingan, situated atop Mount Samat in Pilar town, is built in memory of the soldiers who died in defense of the Philippines.
